Speech and Language Therapy,

Reimagined.

The Roots of South Asian SALT

When people hear Speech and Language Therapy (SALT), they often think it’s just about talking or helping someone pronounce words.

But it’s so much more than that.

It’s about communication in all its forms — the way we connect, listen, express ourselves, and make sense of the world together.

And while Speech and Language Therapy is a profession, this work isn’t just limited to a specialised sector —

it’s something we can all engage in.

Because when we nurture communication in our everyday lives, we take a step toward building a more inclusive, connected world.

In South Asian families, communication is the way stories are passed down across generations, how grandparents and children share traditions, and how families stay connected to their culture and identity.

South Asian Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) was founded by Nisha Veerd, a South Asian Speech and Language Therapist who experienced firsthand the impact of burnout, isolation, and the lack of cultural representation in the profession — as well as the barriers that too often prevent South Asian families from accessing care across health, education, and social care.

What began as one person’s vision has grown into a home for South Asian professionals, students, and families — a place to feel seen, connected, and empowered to thrive.

Partners in Care and Connection

Everyone has a place at South Asian SALT.

Whether you’re a professional, an organisation, or part of the wider community, you are welcome here.

We honour the many intersections of identity, culture, and experience that shape who we are — and we believe each voice adds to the circle.

Partnership, for us, means more than collaboration. It means standing together in care and connection, learning from one another, and creating spaces where all can reflect, grow, and lead with empathy.

Because Every Good Conversation Starts With Chai

At South Asian SALT, chai is more than just a drink — it’s a symbol of connection.

Across South Asian homes and communities, conversations often begin with a cup of chai.

It’s how we welcome people in, how we pause in the middle of busy days, and how we make space for stories to be shared.

Chai is embedded in everything we do here because it reflects the heart of our work:

creating spaces of warmth, care, and reflection where every voice belongs.

Where Are We Now

South Asian SALT has now grown into a space for professionals, organisations, and families to explore communication in all its forms — from differences and challenges to creativity, culture, and care.

Communication is the invisible thread running through health, education, business, and community life.

When it’s overlooked, everyone loses:

  • For professionals & students → it can lead to burnout, disconnection, and limited growth.

  • For communities & families → people are left feeling unheard or excluded.

  • For organisations → it creates barriers to trust, equity, and meaningful leadership.

South Asian SALT is here to change this story.
